Back in early August Gardner-Edgerton running back Traevohn Wrench made a bold statement. He said, “5A is by far tougher than 6A.”
With Gardner-Edgerton moving to 6A, Wrench had his first chance to back his statement up tonight against defending class 6A State Champions Olathe South. Wrench and his teammates wouldn’t back down, and defended their statement as they rolled over Olathe South 34-20.
“Wrench is a special player, he definitely lead us tonight.” Trailblazers head coach Marvin Diener said after the game.
Wrench started his big night with seven minutes left in the first quarter. He broke free of South defenders and went 81 yards for the touchdown.
Olathe South responded with eight minutes left in the half. Starting with a first and goal from the one-yard line, South was stuffed three straight times but on the fourth try Frankie Seurer Jr. sneaked in on a one yard touchdown.
One minute later Wrench broke free again this time for 67 yards giving the Trailblazers a 14-6 lead at the half.
“I told my offensive line if they just give me the block I’d score for them every time,” said a happy Wrench after the game.
Wrench would start the second half right where he left off capping a long drive with a 2-yard touchdown run giving Gardner-Edgerton a 20-6 lead early in the third quarter. After that, South never seemed to be able to grab the momentum back from the Trailblazers.
With one minute left in the third quarter a bad snap on a punt set Olathe South up with first and goal from the three. Just like they had the entire night Gardner-Edgerton’s defense wouldn’t give South anything easy. South again was stopped the first three plays, but Seurer again found the end zone on fourth down from the 1-yard line.
A few plays later Wrench would find the end zone for his final time of the night, this time from 63-yards out giving the Trailblazers a 27-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Wrench finished the night with 316 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
“I wanted to make a statement tonight, this whole team was hungry and we wanted it more,” Wrench said.
The Trailblazers would put the nail in the coffin with five minutes left, as Marshall Wade would run for a six-yard touchdown giving Gardner-Edgerton a 34-13 lead.
“They played good the whole night, but we played perfect.” Wrench said about South
“Out of all the teams I’ve had, this one still has the chance to be the very best,” an emotional coach Diener said after the win.
South would score a late touchdown making your final 34-20. When Wrench was asked if he backed up his quote from the preseason tonight, he simply smiled and said, “Yes sir”
With the win Gardner-Edgerton improves to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in districts. Olathe South drops to 4-3 and finds themselves in a must win situation next week as they sit 0-1 in district play.
“This district will have two very, very good teams come out of it and I hope we’re one of them.” A very happy Diener said about his Trailblazers and their first season in class 6A
