Olathe North 7 SM East 30: Jordan Darling proved worth the hype in his first game on dry turf. The Lancer quarterback threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns leading East to it's first victory over Olathe North in school history. Darling however wasn't the player of the game, as Connor Rellihan caught nine passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. The lone Olathe North touchdown came on a three yard TD run by quarterback Cole Murphy. Olathe North had a shot at getting the game within two points, but SME made a goaline stand stealing the momentum for the rest of the night.
SM North 13 Olathe South 56: Olathe South showed why they belong at the top of the Sunflower League this season with a blowout win over SMN on Friday night. South took a 43-0 lead heading into the half led by Russell White who finished the game with 185 yards rushing. South tacked on two more touchdowns taking a 56-0 lead before North finally got on the board. The two touchdowns for North were scored by running back Henry Bell from (18,10).
Olathe Northwest 14 Olathe East 28: After failing to score a point in week one, Olathe East was poised to make a statement against ONW. Hayden Frazier showed just what he can do on dry ground with his speed on Friday as he rushed for 250 yards and four touchdowns. OE took a 20-7 lead into the half lead by three touchdowns from Frazier (16,65,34). Northwest however would respond as quarterback Holdyn Halperin hooked up with Nathan Power on a 45 yard touchdown pass bringing the Ravens within six at 20-14. Frazier and East would ice the game late in the fourth quarter though with Frazier breaking free for an 11 yard touchdown run to seal the victory 28-14.
SM South 17 Leavenworth 3: Leavenworth was hurt by mistakes all night long against South on Friday which eventually led to a Pioneer loss. Tied at 3 a piece with 40 seconds left until halftime Leavenworth return man Isaiah Ross fielded a South punt and returned it into South territory where he tried to fight for extra yardage and eventually fumbled which was scooped up by South defender Chaz Union who took the fumble 45 yards the other way giving South a 10-3 lead at the half. Down 10-3 in the fourth Leavenworth had a chance to force South to punt and get the ball back. However another mistake by LV this time in the form of a offside call gave South the first down. The very next play South running back Gabe Guild broke free for a 43 yard touchdown run putting South up 17-3. The lead was too much for LV to fight back giving the Pioneers their first loss of the season.
Lawrence 42 SM Northwest 13: The Lions ran all over Northwest on Friday leading to a 42-13 victory. All together Lawrence rushed 37 times for 277 yards. NW could never recover as the Lion defense turned it up holding NW to 13 points. Strauss finished 11-15 169 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Game of the week:
Lawrence Free State 28 SM West 14: It took only two plays for Free State to take the lead Friday at SM West, on the second play from scrimmage Kyle McFarland found Zach Bickling wide open for a 43 yard touchdown pass giving the Firebirds a 7-0 lead. The Vikings would respond with a huge pass play themselves as quarterback AJ Verdini found Andre Maloney for 55 yards tying the game at 7. Free State would take the lead for the rest of the night after Ty Cobbs took a rush 5 yards for a touchdown putting LFS up 14-7. Possibly the play of the night occurred with no time left in the first half when Tye Hughes for LFS took a SMW punt 62 yards for a touchdown putting LFS up 21-7 at the half. The Vikings would yet again respond in the second half as running back Brett Sterback rushed for a three yard touchdown. Sterback finished the night with 152 yards off 24 carries for the Vikings. The combination of McFarland and Cobbs would eventually be too much for the Vikings to handle, after sever key passes and runs from McFarland, Cobbs found the end zone for a second time on the night on a 6 yard touchdown run giving LFS the final score of the night and the win 28-14. Cobbs finished with 80 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. McFarland finished with 133 yards rushing, and 161 yards in the air proving the hype around him being a dual threat quarterback.
