1. Olathe South (1-0): The Falcons managed to fight off a tough Olathe East squad and a Hurricane to pull out a 6-0 week 1 victory. It'll be nice too see how OLS does this week on a dry field against a weaker Shawnee Mission North team.
2. Lawrence Free State (1-0): While most games ended with low scores on Friday night, Free State was able to hang 37 points on Olathe Northwest even with the horrible field conditions. This shows me that LFS is definitely the real deal. This week they face SM West who could sport one of the top defenses in the League.
3. SM West (1-0): The Vikings held on to defeat Lawrence High last week in a close 20-14 ball game. West kept Lawrence out of the end zone on many deep Lawrence drives to preserve the win. If the Vikings can continue to play defense like that, don't expect to see them drop in the rankings.
4. Lawrence (0-1): Lawrence was one dropped pass away from starting the season out 1-0. Led by quarterback Brad Strauss who threw for an impressive 195 yards despite the rain, failed to complete the final pass in the end zone to Drake Hofer as time expired. Despite the loss I still believe Lawrence is a very dangerous team.
5. Olathe East (0-1): Yes the Hawks only lost to Olathe South 6-0, but East really lacked any offense the entire game. Mix that with about 10 fumbled snaps, and OLE looked fairly unimpressive in the rain. On defense the Hawks shut down Olathe South for most of the night, only giving up one big play for 74 yards and the only touchdown of the game. Up next is Olathe Northwest, so we'll get too see if OLE can get the offense going.
6. SM East (1-0): The debut of Jordan Darling was dampened a bit by the rain, as the new quarterback for the Lancers failed to throw for a touchdown. However Darling did score off a one yard scramble to help lead East to a 23-0 win over rival SM South. Up next is Olathe North which will be a battle of two of the top coaches in the Metro area in Chip Sherman(SME) and Gene Wier(OLN).
7. SM Northwest (1-0): New head coach Linn Hibbs made his debut with a bang on Friday night as his Cougars upset Olathe North 25-14. Led by running back Kelby Quint's 154 yards, the Cougars kept Olathe North in check for most of the night. With a week two match up against Lawrence, we'll truly get a chance to see if the Cougs are for real.
8. Olathe North (0-1): This is not the same Olathe North team Gene Wier left in the early 2000's, and Wier will have his work cut out for him this season. Can the legendary coach turn things around for the Eagles and get them back to the top of the Sunflower League. Wier will have a tough week two test against Jordan Darling and SM East.
9. Leavenworth (1-0): Yes the Pioneers crushed SM North 41-16 on Thursday night led by Jason Randall's 225 yards rushing, but the game was tied at the half at 16. This shows me that LV has improved, but they're still a team that lost to SM West 52-7 last season. They'll have to do more than beat SMN for me to move them up in the rankings.
10. SM South (0-1): South was embarrassed in week one by rival SM East 23-0, but the Raiders did have some positive things to take away from the game. For starters running back Gabe Guild looked as impressive as we all thought he would finishing the night with 139 yards. SM South also didn't give up a passing TD, and the weather did force some of their errors. They'll have a chance to get things corrected, and move to .500 on the season when they'll face off with Leavenworth in week 2.
11. Olathe Northwest (0-1): The Ravens were absolutely hammered by Free State in week one 37-0, and from what I've heard OLNW had a real problem holding on to the football. OLNW fumbled the ball 10 times on Friday night, some of which you can blame on the weather but the Ravens need to fix if they want to reach the playoffs for a second straight year.
12. SM North (0-1): The only positive thing I can say about the Indians week one loss is they fought back after trailing 16-0. North never quit in the game, which shows off coach Grayless's tough mentality and never die attitude. Things wont get any easier this week as SMN will meet top ranked Olathe South.
